Belfast — Games between the Belfast and Mount View field hockey teams almost always have been epic stick battles, given the nature of the Waldo County high school athletic rivalry and the fact the Lions and Mustangs usually have the talent necessary to challenge for league, regional and state supremacy.

However, in the squads' first and only "official" meeting of the fall, the host Lions proved dominant and handed the Mustangs a 5-0 defeat on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 7.

Belfast, which annually challenges for North and state Class B crowns, clicked on all cylinders Thursday against Mount View, which has toiled in Class C North in recent years.

In fact, Lindsay Bruns scored three goals en route to a hat trick, while Kelsey Mehuren and Kayci Faulkingham contributed goals for Belfast. Faulkingham, Maya Cunningham, Mallory Tibbetts and Hannah Banks added assists.

The Lions controlled the ball — and game — for much of the 60-minute affair, but led only 1-0 at halftime as the Mustangs battled to stay within striking distance.

In the end, however, the Lions had too much firepower.

Belfast compiled 19 shots on goal and a whopping 14 penalty corners, a reflection of their control of the ball. Goalie Brooke Richards was required to make only one save and did not see much action over the final 30 minutes.

Mount View mustered one shot and three penalty corners on the afternoon, while goalie Alexis Bowman made eight saves in the cage.

Defending regional champion Belfast, 2-0 on the young season, held a 1-0 edge at halftime thanks to Bruns' first goal, off an assist from Faulkingham, at the 11:23-mark.

That is how things stood until the Lions, who continued to apply heavy pressure in the Mustang end during the second half, broke the game open with a flurry of goals late in the half.

Bruns scored again at 11:22, off an assist from Tibbetts, and the Lions quickly followed that up with a score from Mehuren to take a 3-0 advantage. Cunningham scored, off another assist from Faulkingham, and Bruns completed the scoring at the 3:59-mark, on an assist from Hannah Banks.

Mount View is 0-2 on the campaign.
