Belfast — Learn which insects are enemies in your garden and which are beneficial, and plan now to practice prevention and responsible control of destructive insects during the upcoming gardening season.

On Tuesday, Feb. 18, insect diagnostician Clay Kirby of the University of Maine will present a program at Belfast Free Library, 106 High St., that highlights both beneficial and harmful insects that are common in the backyard garden and landscape.

He will discuss a variety of tactics to manage harmful insects responsibly. The presentation, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Belfast Garden Club. It begins at 2 p.m., after a 1 p.m. members’ meeting.

Clay Kirby has a master’s degree in entomology from UMaine. He serves as a resource person for UMaine Extension Service personnel, state agencies, and any Maine citizen with an insect question on topics such as identification, biology and management.

Kirby troubleshoots a wide variety of insect problems, including those that affect trees and ornamental and vegetable plants and shrubs. He has spoken to master gardeners and garden clubs, school children, sporting clubs, conservationists, and greenhouse operators, among many other groups.

The Belfast Garden Club has promoted the creation and care of public gardens and presented speakers to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening for more than 90 years. The 2020 Winter Program Series includes topics about conservation and the environment. For more information, visit
