Belfast Harbor Fest August 16-18, 2019

By Belfast Rotary Club | Aug 15, 2019

To celebrate Belfast as one of midcoast Maine’s thriving culinary and business communities, and to honor200 years of nautical history, the 75-member Rotary Club of Belfast presents the community with the Belfast Harbor Fest, and raises nearly $25,000 for local food pantries, charitable organizations, college scholarships, emergency aid, and holiday gifts for nearly 140 local children, with support from 50 sponsors, vendors, and boatbuilding teams, and more than 60 Rotary and community volunteers. “Not bad for a waterfront community of just over 6,000 people,” says club president and event Chair Duke Marston. Now in its 12th year, the three-day event begins with An Enchanted Evening by the Bay, with dinner provided by several area restaurants, a charity auction, and entertainment. The centerpieces of day two are the National Boatbuilding Championship and northeast Regional Boatbuilding Challenge, with two-person teams building wooden skiffs and vying for cash prizes and bragging rights for fastest built, best built, and rowing race winners. Nearly 5,000 festival attendees also enjoy a pancake breakfast, 5K road race, rowing regatta, classic boat show, shipyard tours, harbor boat trips, music, food, family activities, and a barbeque dinner. The festival ends on day three with a just-for-fun Cardboard Boat Race with prizes for “Fastest Boat,” “Popular Favorite,” and “Best Sinking” entries, and is capped by a Habitat for Humanity benefit lobster bake.
