Belfast Historical Society July 24 Program

“The Poor Farm and the Pest House,” will be the topic of the Belfast Historical Society’s meeting at 7:00 pm on Monday, July 24, in the Abbott Room at the Belfast Free Library. Searsport Town Historian, Charlene Knox Farris, will be the featured speaker. For more than 100 years, before the coming of Social Security, small New England towns took on an obligation of their poor and elderly citizens unable to care for themselves by providing a place to live in exchange for work. And, in a similar vein, dealt with epidemics of incurable diseases by providing places to isolate and care for victims. As part of her research, Farris will share some information that she has found pertaining especially to Belfast.

Belfast Historical Society meetings are free and open to the public and are held April through October. For our program schedule, www.belfastmuseum.org.
