Belfast library offers free video streaming, Friday Night Flix

BELFAST — The Belfast Free Library recently added Kanopy, a free video streaming service, to their website. Anyone with a Belfast library card can watch a wide variety of both recent and classic films, as well as documentaries, children’s programming, educational courses and other video offerings. In September, Friday Night Flix, the library’s free movie program, will present four highly-acclaimed recent films, all of which are available through Kanopy. All features will be shown at 7 p.m. in the Abbott Room, 106 High St.

On Sept. 6, Best Picture Oscar-winner "Moonlight" (2016,USA) will be shown. This film is a moving and transcendent look at three defining chapters in the life of Chiron, a young man growing up in Miami. His epic journey to adulthood, as a shy outsider dealing with difficult circumstances, is guided by support, empathy and love from the most unexpected places. Winner of multiple Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Adapted Screenplay; and Golden Globe winner for Best Motion Picture, Drama. Rated R; runtime 1 hr., 51 min.

"The Florida Project" (2017, USA) will be the feature on Sept. 13. Set on a stretch of highway in a budget motel managed by Bobby (Willem Dafoe), just outside the imagined utopia of Disney World, "The Florida Project" follows six-year-old Moonee and her rebellious mother over the course of a single summer. Dafoe was nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for his performance. Nominated for Best Director and Best Feature at the Film Independent Spirit Awards; Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival. Rated R; runtime 1 hr., 51 min.

On Sept. 20, the award-winning film "Room" (2015, Ireland/Canada/UK/USA) will be shown. A kidnapped mother (Brie Larson) and son (Jacob Tremblay) make a daring escape and experience a dramatic homecoming. Based on the best-selling novel by Emma Donoghue, "Room" is a riveting look at the power of imagination and unstoppable force of a mother's love. Larson won an Oscar, Golden Globe, Independent Spirit Award and BAFTA for her performance.

The final film in this series, "We Need To Talk About Kevin" (2011, UK/USA) will be screened on Sept. 27. In this Golden Globe-nominated psychological thriller, Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton plays Eva, the mother of a deeply disturbed son, Kevin (Ezra Miller). Eva contends with her clueless husband (John C. Reilly) and her son's malevolent ways as the narrative builds to a chilling and unforgettable climax. Swinton was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress and for the Alexander Korda Award for Best Leading Actress. Rated R; runtime 1 hr., 52 min.
