Belfast man among several charged in prison contraband investigation

A month long investigation at Two Bridges Regional Jail has resulted in numerous charges for drug trafficking.

The investigation began in early August 2017, when corrections sfficers intercepted incoming mail that contained Suboxone strips, according to a Sept. 9 press release from Lt. Michael Murphy of Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.  Further investigation revealed inmates assigned to the outside work crew were also smuggling Suboxone into the facility, police said.

Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division charged six people total.

Arrested were Heather McAlister, 28, of Mexico; Brendon McLellen, 31, of Newcastle; and James "Ryan" Witham, 37, of Belfast. Each was charged with trafficking prison contraband, class C, and McAlister also was charged with violation of conditional release.

Two Bridges inmate Jordan Bennett, 31, of Rumford was summonsed for trafficking prison contraband, class C; as was inmate Jonathan Smith, 29, of Rumford.

Summonsed and held on a probation violation at Franklin County Jail was Russell Smith, 61, of Carthage, who was charged with trafficking prison contraband, class C.  Police say Russell Smith is the father of Jonathan Smith.

Assisting agencies in this investigation included Rumford Police, Mexico Police, Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and Two Bridges Regional Jail.
