Belfast — On Friday, Feb. 21, the Belfast Maskers community theater company welcomes community members to the Basil Burwell Community Theater for a first peek at the new artwork adorning the theater entrance and stairwell. Visit the open house at “The Bazz” theater anytime from 6 to 8 p.m. to view original murals created by artist Krista Odom of Belfast. Light snacks and beverages will be provided.

Visitors are invited on tours of the theater highlighting the new custom-built seating risers. The modular risers were recently completed thanks to a generous grant from the Maine Theater Fund. Comfortable new seats are filling the rows on the risers and supporters are invited to Sponsor-a-Seat with a custom name plaque or dedication. Details about the Sponsor-a-Seat donation program are available at

The Belfast Maskers host their annual members meeting on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 5 p.m., also at the Bazz. Following the meeting the Maskers invite all volunteers to attend a celebration of thanks for their work to bring lively performances to the theater year round. The Mardi Gras-themed party and dance, catered by the Maskers’ board of directors, will include the annual Golden Mask Awards presentation for outstanding performances in the company’s 2019 productions.

To round out the weekend, the Maskers hold open auditions for their annual One-Act Play Festival on Sunday, Feb. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. and Monday, Feb. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. Auditions will be held in the lower level of The Bazz Theater.

This year, four one-act plays by Maine playwrights will be performed: "Gloria Anderson" by Kevin O’Leary – David turns up on Edward’s doorstep looking for someone he’s never met, and ends up confronting something much bigger from his past that either man is ready to own up to; "O’Hare – Gate A4" by Eddie Adelman – During a raging blizzard at O’Hare International Airport, two former high school sweethearts meet by accident many years later and unexpectedly find renewed meaning together; "The Store" by Travis Baker – Artificial intelligence finally comes to town… and it’s potato intolerant; and "Great Escapes" by David Susman – Mom bursts out of the assisted living and shows up on her son’s doorstep for help.

Auditions are for adults ages 30 to 80. If you are unable to attend scheduled auditions but are interested, please email Greg Marsanskis at or Meg Nickerson at Performances will be May 1, 2, 8, 9 and 15.

The Bazz Theater is located at 17 Court St. For more information about the theater building or the Maskers 2020 season, visit
