Belfast — Outdoor performances by the Belfast Maskers will return May 20-23 in front of 17 Court St. and may continue, possibly this summer. City councilors approved a facility use permit for the event April 6.

The area of Court Street between Miller and Spring streets will be closed off for audience seating. Shakespeare's “As You Like It” will be performed from 4 to 10 p.m., according to Parks and Recreation Director Norm Poirier.

The group will follow all Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and encourage mask-wearing. The event is limited to an audience of 40 to 45 people only with socially distanced seating, he said.

Councilor Brenda Bonneville said she is glad the outdoor event is possible and is safe. She is happy that people can enjoy some entertainment during a not-so-entertaining time. There could be outdoor performances by the group in June if large indoor gatherings are still prohibited.
