Belfast — The rich, longstanding Waldo County high school rivalry between the Belfast and Mount View softball teams was renewed — and did not disappoint — on Monday, May 13 at Walsh Field as the opponents jockeyed for position and traded leads throughout the low-scoring, seven-inning affair.

The game was knotted 3-3 in the sixth inning before Belfast saw its patience at the plate pay off as four walks issued in the frame led to two late runs and, ultimately, a 5-3, come-from-behind win for the Lions.

Mount View scored two runs in the first inning and added another in the sixth, while Belfast plated two in the second, one in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Leading the Lions at the plate were Sarah Fuller (run), Kayci Faulkingham (single), Maya Cunningham (2 singles, stolen base), Brooke Richards (single, stolen base), Karagen Stone (single, run, 2 stolen bases), Grace Fitzjurls (run) and Angela Rodgers (single, 2 runs, 2 stolen bases).

For the Mustangs, Hannah Coolen (run), Kate Bourgeois (single), Alex Fountain (single, 2 runs,), Taylor Hodgdon (2 singles), Emma Fonger (single) and Emily Lancaster (double) paced the offense.

Gia Davila pitched for Belfast, as she allowed six hits and three walks, with 13 strikeouts. Morgan Fonger pitched for Mount View, as she allowed six hits and eight walks, with one strikeout.

The ‘Stangs got on the board quickly when Coolen drew a walk and Bourgeois singled to put two runners on. After a walk to Fountain loaded the bases, Coolen came in on a fielder’s choice, followed by an RBI-single by Emma Fonger to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

The Lions responded in the second when Stone singled and stole second base ahead of Rodgers, who reached on a bunt single, which put runners at the corners.

Rodgers stole second base and, after the throw by the Mount View catcher trickled into center field, Stone scampered home to cut Belfast’s deficit in half. Rodgers eventually came in on a wild pitch as the hosts knotted the score.

Belfast took a brief 3-2 lead in the fifth when Fuller singled, stole second base, later moved to third on a walk to load the bases and stole home, but the Mustangs responded in the sixth when Fountain singled, made it all to the way to third off passed balls and knotted the score when she came in on an error.

However, the Lions took the advantage for good in the sixth when Rodgers scored off a wild pitch and Fitzjurls came in after a sacrifice fly by Faulkingham.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Belfast (3-6, 16.3281 points) is 13th, while Mount View (2-7, 1.2500 points) is 20th. Brewer (9-0, 66.0156 points) is first in the 21-team region. The top 14 teams qualify for the playoffs.
