Thorndike — One has to get up especially early to beat the swarm of the black flies — the unofficial bird of Maine — in the late spring and, try as they might, the Mount View and Belfast baseball and softball teams started their high school games at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning and battled in two competitive games, but could not escape the invasion of the pesky and highly-annoying insects.

The good news was it was somewhat windy and that helped keep the miniature pests at bay much of morning, May 18 and allowed the young Waldo County student-athletes to have some fun in the sun.

When the dust settled, the longstanding county athletic rivals had split a pair of fairly competitive games.

In softball, Mount View rallied late for an 8-7 victory as the evenly-matched foes stood toe to toe and thrilled fans, while, in baseball, the Lions slowly, but surely, carved out an 8-3 win.

The softball squads split two games this spring, as the host Lions won the first game 5-3. In baseball, Belfast also prevailed at home 18-8 earlier in the spring.

Regular-season games for the four Waldo County diamond squads have come fast and furious of late with a bundle of early rainouts that created the need for contests most days, with few practice opportunities.

The following is a recap of both games:
