Belfast — Belfast is in the process of selecting a new Poet Laureate who will serve a two-year term and help organize events, such as the annual Belfast Poetry Festival.

The committee responsible for choosing the next Poet Laureate is comprised of City Councilor Roger Lee; Thomas Maycock, student of Irish Poetry; David Etsey, representing the arts community; Brenda Harrington from the Belfast Free Library; past Poet Laureate Elizabeth Garber and Director of the Maine Writers and Publishers Joshua Bodwell.

Residents in the abutting towns of Belmont, Morrill, Northport, Searsport, Swanville and Waldo also were encouraged to apply for the position. Garber said the committee received a total of five nominations for three poets –– one poet was nominated twice –– and two applications.

The new Poet Laureate will be presented during the Dec. 4 City Council meeting.
