Belfast, Searsport runners push to limit at state championships

Nine Lions, one Viking among those who compete in Southern Maine meet

Cumberland — Ten Waldo County high school cross-country runners — nine from Belfast and one from Searsport — pushed themselves to the limit in the state championship races on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Twin Brook Recreation Area.

The Belfast boys qualified as a team, while three Lion boys and two girls, along with a Viking boy, qualified as individuals to compete in the state Class B or Class C races. As a team, seven total Lion boys were eligible to compete in the event.

The Waldo County state participants were Belfast's Ricky Smith, Brendan Moline, Eamon Goscinski, Timmy Smith, Joseph Potter, Gary Moline, Nathaniel Morsey, Lillie Mitchell and Zoe Deans, along with Searsport's Holden Clapp.

The state Class B boys championship team scores were: Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 56, Freeport 114, Yarmouth 115, Wells 121, Caribou 154, Cape Elizabeth 177, Hermon 178, Mount Desert island 181, York 190, Waterville 214, Presque Isle 263, Belfast 267, Lake Region 294 and Erskine Academy of South China 357.

Among 110 runners in the Class B boys race, won by Yarmouth's Luke Laverdiere in 15:43.89, the Lion results included: Ricky Smith 36th in 18:44.17, Brendan Moline 41st in 18:49.29, Goscinski 45th in 18:52.26, Timmy Smith 90th in 19:58.82, Potter 98th 20:54.89, Gary Moline 101st in 21:07.03 and Morsey 109th 7:17.7 22:39.74 97

Among 96 runners in the Class B girls race, won by Freeport's Lily Horne in 19:10.85, the Lion results included: Mitchell 64th in 23:28.26 and Deans 81st in 24:27.49.

Among 114 runners in the Class C boys race, won by Waynflete's Henry Sprintz in 17:01.67, the Viking result included: Clapp 52nd in 19:40.80.

Overall, among the 291 girls from all classes who competed, Mitchell finished 193rd and Deans 242nd.

Overall, among the 344 boys from all classes who competed, Ricky Smith finished 122nd, Brendan Moline 131st, Goscinski 138th and Clapp 228th, to name a few.

Of the 44 boys teams, regardless of class affiliation, that competed, Belfast finished 33rd.
