Belfast squads experience strong court success, eye playoff berths

Lion squads have combined for 11 victories thus far this spring

Belfast — It has been a highly-successful spring on the high school tennis courts for Belfast, as the Lions have combined for 11 victories and look to serve up strong playoff positions and perhaps solid postseason success.

Belfast split their matches on Wednesday, May 9 with Gardiner, as the road teams swung to victories. The Lion girls also lost to Erskine Academy of South China the following day, on Thursday, May 10.

On Wednesday, the Lion boys battled to pick up a 3-2 win in Gardiner, while the Lion girls were downed decisively by the Tigers and Eagles 5-0 in Belfast.

Additionally, the boys and girls swung back into action on Friday, May 11 against Winslow, and both teams picked up 4-1 wins over the Black Raiders, while on Monday, May 14, the Lion boys beat Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 3-2, while the girls lost to the Eagles 5-0.

For the boys, in the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Belfast (6-3, 57.5000 points) is third, while Waterville (10-0, 120.4167 points) is first in the 17-team region. The top 12 teams make the playoffs.

For the girls, in the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Belfast (5-4, 19.3056 points) is seventh, while Caribou (8-0, 83.3333 points) is first in the 17-team region. The top 12 teams make the playoffs.

Boys Tennis

Belfast 3, Lincoln Academy 2

At Newcastle May 14, the Lions caged the Eagles.

The individual results, with Belfast players listed first, were: In singles, Eli Jolliffe beat Charles Van Damme, 6-1, 6-0; Rudi Schnetzer lost to Jorge Pulido Fernandez, 4-6, 1-6; and Josh Chun beat Sam Ransley, 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, Max Lewis and Dyllan Clark beat Pol Anmella Carnice and Ethan Jones, 8-6 (tiebreaker), 6-3; and Kyle Agbuya and Thuan Phan lost to Chase Harris and Sam Richards, 3-6, 6-7 (tiebreaker).

Belfast 4, Winslow 1

At Belfast May 11, the Lions clawed past the Black Raiders.

The individual results, with Belfast players listed first, were: In singles, Eli Jolliffe beat Jake LaPierre, 9-7; Rudi Schnetzer lost to Josh Vashon in a tiebreaker, 7-4; and Josh Chun won by forfeit.

In doubles, Max Lewis and Dyllan Clark beat Lucas Porter and Cam Brookway, 8-5; and Kyle Agbuya and Thuan Phan won by forfeit.

Belfast 3, Gardiner 2

At Gardiner May 9, the Lions edged the Tigers.

The individual results, with Belfast players listed first, were: In singles, Eli Jolliffe beat Charlie Caldwell, 6-0, 6-1; Rudi Schnetzer lost (name of opponent unavailable), 3-6, 7-9 (11-13 tiebreaker); and Max Lewis beat Arthur Taylor, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles, Josh Chun and Dyllan Clark beat Ted Malinowski and Dustin Allard, 6-2, 6-4; and Kyle Agbuya and Thuan Pham lost to Evan Walls and Nick Flowers, 5-7, 2-6.

Girls Tennis

Belfast 4, Winslow 1

At Winslow May 11, the Lions prowled past the Black Raiders

The individual results, with Belfast players listed first, were: In singles, Julia Cerone lost to Juliann Lapierre, 7-9; Samantha Hills beat Elizabeth Farnham, 8-3; and Alexia Sweet beat Desiree Veilleux, 8-5.

In doubles, Kristina Walker and Starr Warner beat Elyse St. Pierre and Haley Twitchell, 8-2; and Olivia LaRouche and Clarisse Stradtman beat Shaylie Mornson and Abigail Thibodeau, 8-1.

Erskine Academy 5, Belfast 0

At Belfast May 10, the Eagles flew by the Lions.

The individual results, with Belfast players listed first, were: Julia Cerone lost to Ellie Hodgkin, 2-8; Samantha Hills lost to Regina Harmon, 6-8; and Alexia Sweet lost to Kayla Hubbard, 4-8.

In doubles, Kristina Walker and Starr Warner lost to Paige Leary and Anne Marie Allen, 4-8; and Olivia LaRouche and Clarisse Stradtman lost to Lucy Allen and Morgaine Kmen, 4-8.

Gardiner 5, Belfast 0

At Belfast May 9, the Tigers clawed past the Lions.

The individual results, with Belfast players listed first, were: In singles, Julia Cerone lost to Kiara Gaggin, 1-8; Alexia Sweet lost to Lexi Nestor, 3-8; and Starr Warner lost to Tiffany Chadbourne, 4-8.

In doubles, Kristina Walker and Samantha Hills lost to Lindsey Bell and Lexy Pinkham, 3-8; and Olivia LaRouche and Clarisse Stradtman lost to Hanna Foust and Emily Peacock, 5-8.
