Earthquake hits local area

At approximately 11 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, the Belfast area was hit by an earthquake. i did not get the fine points of exact location in the one blurb I heard on a WLBZ, Channel 2, newscast, but the instruments of the Weston Observatory recorded it as a 2.1 magnitude, generally very minor as earthquakes go. A local law enforcement agency reported feeling the tremor. Here in the Valley i was busy preparing for the Lincolnville Farmers' Market on Saturday and while I did not feel anything, i was aware of a noise that could not be equated with the roar of an aircraft. The fact that it did not get mentioned in more than one newscast indicates its relative obscurity on the Richter Scale.

The recent 3.4 magnitude earthquake near Hollis was felt as far awy as Rhode island and Connecticut and generated widespread reports.

Patriots, thankful

I left the thanksgiving table at my sister's in Clinton feeling pretty well stuffed, generally with too much of everything that was served. Shortly after 8 p.m. the Patriots started one of the best games they have ever played against the New York Jets. I hope the laughter was effective exercise for working off some of the excess weight. I also hope this game served to quiet Rex Ryan, the Jets coach, who, a few years ago, was very loud in his comparisons of the Jets and himself to the Patriots and Coach Bill Belichek.

Rex Ryan spent most of the game shaking his head on the sidelines as the Patriots scored 35 points int he second period, with three touchdowns in just one 52-second span. Meanwhile, in a five-day span form Sunday evening to the Thanksgiving Day game, the Patriots scored 108 points, many of them defensive and special teams points, quite a feat.

Belmont community Christmas party
