Belfast — Hundreds gathered at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center Monday night, Aug. 20, for a meet-and-greet with local businesses and individuals who readers of The Republican Journal voted the best in their fields.

The Journal's own Tanya Mitchell was honored as the best local writer for 2012.

Businesses and professionals honored in the contest set up tables to display their wares and services. Many also offered giveaways, and some of this year's winners provided items to be sold in the silent auction, the proceeds of which go toward scholarships for students attending classes at the Hutchinson Center.

The event also featured live music from The Juke Rockets, which readers named the best band in Waldo County for 2012.

Those who attended the gala spent the evening socialized with the proprietors of businesses like Rollie's, which was honored with the title of best sports bar, or the Belfast Co-op, which readers agreed served up the best healthy lunch.
