Belfast — October’s Friday Night Flix film series at Belfast Free Library, 106 High St., focuses on marriage. The free weekly screenings are at 7 p.m. in the downtown library’s Abbott Room.

The series continues Oct. 19 with “The Patience Stone” (2012, Afghanistan/France/Germany/UK), directed by the French-Afghan Atiq Rahimi and based on his 2008 novel of the same title. In Persian folklore, the patience stone absorbs the plight of those who confide in it. Here, the “stone” to whom a wife confides is her terrorist husband, lying brain-dead with a bullet lodged in his neck. As the wife begins to care for her husband, she speaks to him of her life under Islamic fundamentalism and the past difficult 10 years of their marriage, while protecting him and herself in the midst of a war-torn Middle East.

“The Patience Stone” is rated R, runs 102 minutes and in screened in Dari with subtitles. The marriage series concludes Oct. 26 with “Ushpizin” (2004, Israel).
