Bath — Whether on a rain-drenched Richmond High School home field or the more reliable artificial turf surface at McMann Outdoor Athletic Complex, the No. 7 Searsport girls soccer team had a tough hand dealt to it in the Class D South playoffs, as the Vikings were tasked with attempting to unseat the No. 2 Bobcats.

The seasoned Bobcats, annually in the mix for Class D’s richest prize — competing in three of the past four state finals and booting to a pair of gold balls — put the Monday night, Oct. 28 game away against the young Vikings early and substituted liberally over the final 30 minutes on their way to a 7-1 quarterfinal playoff victory.

With the win, Richmond (11-3) advances to the semifinals, where it will face either No. 3 Buckfield (9-4-1) or No. 6 Rangeley (7-5).

Searsport’s season concluded at 3-12.

In Monday night’s win, it was the Bry Shea show in the early going as the Bobcat had a hat trick within the game’s first 13 minutes, off assists from three teammates for Richmond.

Laura Brown also added two goals and one assist in the win for the Bobcats, while Abby Johnson (goal, assist), Leah Wescott (goal, assist), Rylie Irish (assist), Paige Lebel (assist) and Shea (assist) filled out the hosts’ statistical sheet.

Searsport managed only two shots, but converted one of them with 2:03 to go in the game off a corner kick.

Makenzie Alley served the ball on net toward the near post, where Jordan Greeley settled it and nestled it into the side of the net to put the Vikings on the board.

Richmond went up 1-0 early in the first half with 32:57 to go off the counterattack when Irish converted a nice through-ball to the right and to Shea, who beat her defender and crossed the ball past keeper Sarah Gent to the far post.

The Bobcats doubled their lead about two-and-half-minutes later when Johnson, down the left sideline, crossed a ball into the middle to Shea, who was well-marked by Emma Spiegel.

However, a collision between the duo and Gent saw Shea get just enough on it for the ball to trickle into the net with 30:24 remaining.

Shea added her third goal with 28:11 remaining before Wescott peppered at a pursuing Gent — and made a block of the shot with her hands — but the ball skipped off her palms skyward and into the net.

It was just that kind of night for the Vikings.

Richmond held a 13-2 edge in shots, while Gent made eight saves in goal for Searsport. Liz Johnson minded the net for Richmond. The Bobcats held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Searsport graduates one senior in captain Abby Stemp, while four juniors, four sophomores and six freshmen round out its roster.
