Brady’s ‘New Misfits’ opens Perimeter year

Camden’s Meghan Brady is in the first cohort of Ellis-Beauregard Foundation artists-in-residence at Rockland’s Lincoln Street Center. Some of the results are going on view at Belfast's Perimeter Gallery.

Belfast — Perimeter Gallery will present “New Misfits,” a series of room-sized acrylic paintings on paper and Tyvek by Camden artist Meghan Brady, this winter. The exhibition will open Thursday, Jan. 18, with a reception that evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and continue through March 18.

Since August, Brady has been in residence at the Lincoln Street Center, a former public school in Rockland, through the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation. The new, very large paintings on view at Perimeter came about in response to the high-ceilinged, over-sized classroom that has been her residency studio.

“Through the slate blackboards and sprawling empty rooms, I can feel the youthful spirits that have moved through the building — unruly, hopeful, kinetic, loud,” she said

Brady said that in shifting her focus from oil on canvas to a temporary, inexpensive material easily reconfigured with scissors and glue, she has had the chance to make heroic paintings while experimenting freely with her language and vocabulary in paint.

“I feel no pressure to package these paintings as anything more than what they are: quick, earnest communications of the mess and total joy of it all,” she said.

Brady has exhibited widely including at the Portland Museum of Art, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockland, ICON Contemporary in Brunswick, SPACE and Able Baker Contemporary in Portland, as well as a number of galleries in New York and beyond. More images of her work are available at
