Kate Braestrup

BELFAST — Author Kate Braestrup will speak Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m. at Left Bank Books, 109 Church St. She has written numerous books: "Here If You Need Me;" "Marriage and Other Acts of Charity;" "Beginner's Grace: Bringing Prayer to Life;" and "Anchor & Flares: A Memoir of Motherhood, Hope & Service."

If you haven't had the pleasure of hearing Kate speak before, Left Bank strongly suggests that, if you have conflicting plans for Wednesday night, you re-arrange them. Yes, she's that good. And inspiring. And wicked funny. And thoughtful. And smart. Let us count the ways we celebrate when we're able to host Kate.

Kate has a new book in the works and she's kindly offered to share some behind-the-scenes information about what readers can look forward to when it's published. Although there is no publish date yet, Kate says the title will be "Menopausal Women Unite: We Can't Remember Why." Is Kate pulling our legs or not?

Left Bank hopes that she'll also share some insights into her creative process and tell attendees about what other literary (or not) projects she has in the works — Kate seems never to be at rest.

When not writing, Kate is a community minister and chaplain to the Maine Warden Service. She brings a rich and varied background to her books: She spent her childhood in Algiers, New York City, Paris, Bangkok, and Washington, D.C. (her father was a foreign correspondent). Kate's husband, a Maine Trooper, was killed while on duty in 1996, leaving Kate a widowed mother of four children between the ages of 3 and 9. She was ordained a Unitarian Universalist minister in 2004 and, in 2006 remarried. Through all the highs and lows, Kate wrote — about motherhood, her engagement with prayer, loss, faith, marriage and so much more, all with honesty, humor, insight, grace and beauty.

This event is free and open to the public, but reservations are strongly suggested. Please email leftbank@myfairpoint.net or call 338-9009 to reserve seats or for more information.
