Classroom at Prospect's restored Marsh School, 930 Bangor Road/Route 1A, which will be open for families to picnic and reminisce Sept. 16.

Prospect — Marsh School, the last standing one-room schoolhouse in Prospect, and its grounds at 930 Bangor Road/Route 1A, will be open for a reunion and family picnic Saturday, Sept. 16, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

At one time, there were as many as a dozen one-room primary schools scattered throughout Prospect, a small, rural community; now only the Marsh School building remains. For more than 125 years Prospect children dipped their pens into Marsh School inkwells to practice penmanship, studied maps, learned to spell and do sums, and made their way to the privy when the need arose.

Sponsored by the Prospect Historical Society, the “bring your own picnic” will celebrate the old country school. Drinks and desserts will be provided as well as games and activities for children. It is hoped that that anyone who has had a country school experience will come to the event with tales to tell about the way life used to be.

The Marsh School is situated about a half-mile south of the fire station.

Last remaining one-room schoolhouse in Prospect, where the Historical Society is hosting a "bring your own" family picnic Sept. 16.
