Waldoboro — The top-seeded Medomak Valley boys basketball team, for three quarters, saw itself locked in a dogfight with No. 4 Mount View of Thorndike in the semifinal playoff round of the Kno-Wal-Lin (Knox-Waldo-Lincoln county) COVID Basketball Tournament on Monday, March 8.
But a late offensive surge for the Panthers — and the overall play of stalwart forward Trevor Brown — gave the hosts the boost needed to the tune of a 23-10 run over the final eight minutes en route to a 64-47 win over the Mustangs.
With the high school court win, Medomak Valley (11-2) advances to the Kno-Wal-Lin championship game, where it will host No. 2 Camden Hills (10-2) on Thursday, March 11 at 7 p.m.
Mount View, which advanced to the semifinals after No. 5 Boothbay Region was forced to forfeit due to COVID-related issues, saw its season conclude at 9-5.
In the regular season, the Windjammers beat the Panthers twice — 72-44 and 53-49.
Additionally, Medomak Valley did not play the Mustangs twice during the pandemic-altered 2020-21 campaign.
In Monday's playoff clash, Medomak Valley led 13-6, 28-23 and 41-37 at the quarter breaks.
Brown was dominant on the night for the Panthers, as he poured in 29 points, while Patrick McKenney added 13; Parker Morrison, six; Jacob Craig, Jake Bickmore and Finn Parmley, four; and Garret Hutchins, two.
Declan Knowlton paced the Mustangs with 13 points, while Tyler Russell tallied 12; Draedyn Furrow, eight; Joe Grassi, seven; Noah Hurd, three; and I. Ellis, two.
Medomak Valley was 7-of-15 (47 percent) from the foul line, while Mount View was 4-of-11 (36 percent).
After Furrow scored back-to-back layups around a floater in the paint from McKenney, Bickmore canned a trey, followed by eight straight points from Brown to give Medomak Valley an early 13-4 advantage.
Midway through the second quarter, as the Panthers maintained that nine-point edge — this time at 24-15 after a long jumper by Brown — Russell drilled a three-pointer and a scrappy bucket on the baseline by Evensen saw the Mustangs down 24-20 with three minutes to play.
Craig gave the Panthers breathing room after an offensive putback, but a trey from Knowlton brought the ‘Stangs within 26-23.
Trailing by five points at halftime, Grassi ran the pick-and-roll with Russell to perfection and followed up with a three-point play to tie the game 28-28.
Parmley then scored four quick points for the hosts after a tough hoop in the paint and a baseline jumper.
But after Knowlton and Brown traded baskets, a Russell three-pointer and a layup from Furrow gave Mount View its first lead since 4-2 at 35-34.
The opponents traded leads over the following few possessions before hoops from Craig and Brown broke a 37-37 tie and gave the Panthers a four-point edge heading into the final stanza.
Those hoops keyed a 10-0 run into the fourth quarter for the hosts as Mount View got no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
