Damariscotta — River Arts on Route 1 invites artists throughout Maine to submit artwork for jurying in its upcoming “Black & White” exhibition. Artists can submit up to three works in any medium including sculpture, photography, collage, painting, ceramics and fine craft — representational or abstract — black, white, gray and maybe a touch of something else.

Work can be delivered anytime during gallery hours until the deadline, which is Saturday, Jan. 6, at 4 p.m. An opening reception will be held Friday, Jan 12, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Juror for this exhibition will be Bruce Brown. A Portland native, retired schoolteacher Brown has developed an impressive record in the Maine arts community. As curator of the Center for Maine Contemporary Art (formerly Maine Coast Artists) from 1987 to 2006, Brown introduced the work of hundreds, if not thousands, of contemporary artists to audiences in Maine.

Brown has launched careers, published catalogs, produced groundbreaking exhibitions and collected passionately. In the March 2007 issue of Arts and Antiques, he was recognized as one of the 100 top collectors in America, based on his willingness to share his collection with the public.

Artists may submit up to three works for an entry fee of $20, $15 for members. Artists will be notified by email or phone of the juror’s decision. Submissions may not have been shown at River Arts previously. Entry forms are available online at riverartsme.org and at the gallery, 241 Route 1, when submitting. Queries and requests may be directed to River Arts at 563-1507 or info@riverartsme.org.

River Arts is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
