Camden Hills Crew holds learn-to-row, swing row sessions

By Staff | Jul 16, 2017
Experienced or returning rowers can join Camden Hills Crew for night swing rows in the eight-person shell on July 26, Aug. 2 and Aug. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Camden Hills Crew will offer learn-to-row sessions on three Saturday mornings July 22, July 29 and Aug. 5 from 8 to 10 a.m. The first session is free, with a $20 fee for subsequent sessions.

In addition to the learn-to-row sessions, the organization will offer a swing row for experienced rowers in an eight-person racing shell on three Wednesday nights, July 26, Aug. 2 and Aug. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost is $20 per session.

Call secretary Kristi Hardy-Gilson at 322-8531 to register for either of the programs or sessions.

The programs will be on Megunticook Lake, but the exact locations have not been determined.

Camden Hills Crew is coached by Ryan Boutote, who rowed for Rutgers University. He previously coached at Bishop Eustace High School in New Jersey and with Megunticook Rowing in Camden for two seasons. He now leads the competitive rowing program for Camden Hills Crew, who row out of Camp Bishopswood in Hope in the fall and spring.

Camden Hills Crew also is coached by Jeff Foltz, a veteran rower with masters-level experience. He coached the crew in their winter dryland training and spring rowing season. Foltz brings a lifetime of rowing experience to the crew and a blend of patience and skill instruction to first-time rowers, Hardy-Gilson said.

In other Camden Hills Crew news, the group will have a special launch event in the coming weeks that will name and launch an 8+ called the James B. Wescott.

Wescott was a rower, Colby College track coach, and friend to Foltz and Don Seales (the organization's friend, rower and boat repair man). Wescott had a heart episode rowing with Seales and Foltz and Wescott died on Megunticook Lake a few years back.
