A message from the Vision Council:

May is full of fun things to celebrate – Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day etc. but it is also a very important month for your eyes! It is Healthy Vision Month – which was created to promote eye health and the importance of eye exams for the early detection and treatment of various diseases that can affect your vision.

Vision is such an important part of our everyday lives and we rely on it during virtually every waking moment, but we often take it for granted. Healthy vision is not guaranteed to everyone forever. Just like other aspects of your health, the eyes must be protected, cared for and tended to by trained professionals.

Caring for your vision begins by protecting the eyes from injury and disease, recognizing the warning signs of vision problems and eye disease, and correcting or treating vision problems as they arise. During healthy vision month, the National Eye Institute encourages Americans to make their eye health a priority. Here are a few steps to take to help protect your eyes:

  • Get a dilated eye exam

  • Live a healthy lifestyle including eating healthy foods, managing chronic conditions and not smoking

  • Know your family history

  • Use protective eyewear

  • Wear sunglasses

Start with these steps to help keep your eyes healthy – and encourage family and friends to do the same! - Vision Council
