Christmas present: Mother Nature gives athletes unexpected holiday break

Scheduled Dec. 22-23 events postponed due to wintry weather

A White Christmas most certainly is in the forecast for Midcoast residents, but so to are a bevy of cancellations and postponements of high school athletic events for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 22-23.

Other than three basketball games moved to earlier in the day on Friday, all other athletic events have been moved due to the storm that began midday Friday with snow and is expected to continue into Saturday night as well as turn to freezing rain.

The only games played on Friday were the Belfast basketball games home and away with Ellsworth, while the Camden Hills girls hit the road to play Gardiner in Augusta.

A breakdown of postponed events follows:

Dec. 22

Boys basketball — Gardiner at Camden Hills (Wednesday, Dec. 27 at 6:30 p.m.).

Girls basketball — Hermon at Oceanside (Monday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m.).

Wrestling — Oceanside, Camden Hills, Belfast, Dexter and Penobscot Valley of Howland at Bucksport (makeup date to be determined).

Swimming — Belfast at Lincoln Academy of Newcastle (makeup to be determined); and Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield at Camden Hills (makeup to be determined).

Indoor track — Oceanside, Medomak Valley, Camden Hills, Maine Central Institute, Nokomis of Newport, Lawrence of Fairfield, Erskine Academy of South China, Lewiston, Winslow and Brunswick at Colby College in Waterville (Wednesday, Dec. 27 at 10:30 a.m., venue change to Bowdoin College in Brunswick).

Dec. 23

Boys basketball — Oceanside at Hermon (makeup date to be determined); and Searsport at Penobscot Valley (Monday, Jan. 15 at 4:30 p.m.)

Wrestling — Medomak Valley at Atlantic Invitational in Wells (Wednesday, Dec. 27 at 9 a.m.)

Ice hockey — Presque Isle at Camden Hills (makeup date to be determined).

Indoor track — Belfast, Mount View of Thorndike, Cony of Augusta, Edward Little of Auburn, Lincoln Academy, Messalonskee of Oakland, Mount Ararat of Topsham, Skowhegan and Waterville at Bowdoin College in Brunswick (makeup date to be determined).
