Cohen backs Golden

Oct 12, 2020

William Cohen, former Defense secretary, senator and congressman, has endorsed Democrat Jared Golden in his bid for reelection to the U.S. House from Maine's Second District.

“As I’ve gotten to know Jared during his time in Congress, I have been impressed by what I’ve seen: he is thoughtful, hardworking, and genuinely committed to public service," Cohen said in his endorsement. "From his time in the Marines to his work in Congress, Jared always puts service to country above all else. The people of the Second District should be confident that Jared will continue to keep their interests first, and I ask my fellow Mainers to join me this fall in support of Congressman Golden.”

Cohen served on the Bangor City Council and as mayor before being elected to Congress at age 32 to represent Maine’s Second District in 1972. During the Watergate scandal, Cohen voted against his party to impeach President Nixon on two of the three articles of impeachment. Cohen went on to establish a reputation as a well-respected, independent member of the House and Senate, delivering for Maine people. In 1996, President Clinton announced his nomination of Cohen to be secretary of Defense, a position he held from 1997 to 2001.
