Cold weather no problem for 'Jingle Bell' 5K participants

Winchenbach first overall, Morse cruises in as initial female finisher

Rockland — Fifty hardy souls shrugged off cold conditions — with the help of winter hats, gloves, mittens, ear muffs and all other manor of warm attire — to participate in the Penobscot Bay YMCA's first "Jingle Bell" Rock Harbor 5-kilometer road race/walk on Sunday morning, Dec. 17.

The event was hosted by the Rockland Harbor YMCA and the race sponsors were FIORE Artisan Olive Oils and Vinegars and PALS for Living.

Darren Winchenbach, 36, of Saco finished the 3.1-mile trek around the South End of the city first in 21:07, while Samantha Morse, 21, of Rockport was the first female finisher in 21:36, and second overall.

There were participants of all ages, including a handful of young children, who braved the cold conditions, but he relatively snow-and-ice-covered streets.
