Belfast — The Come Boating! Adventure Series returns with a re-scheduled program on Tuesday, May 14, 6:30 p.m., with a screening at Belfast Free Library, 106 High St., of rare film footage from the 1940 National Whitewater Championships.

The talk, co-sponsored by Come Boating! Belfast’s Community Boating Organization and the library, is free and open to all

Maine canoeist Zip Kellogg will present the film featuring the First National Whitewater Canoe and Kayak Championships held in Maine in 1940 on the legendary Rapid River. The film was missing for about 70 years and Kellogg found it down the road at Northeast Historic Film in Bucksport.

Kellogg puts the race in the context of its time using some informative and hilarious notes and letters he has turned up. This is an action-packed film in which not everyone went home after the race with the same boat — if they took a boat at all!
