Unity — Rain did not dampen the mood of the many revelers who took part in Unity's third annual Yuletide Tree Lighting Sunday.

Earlier in the day, several inches of snow fell, setting the stage for a picture-perfect event, but by the time the Unity College Chorus began singing in front of Bangor Savings Bank at 4:30 p.m., the snow had turned to drizzling rain.

The carolers sang old-time favorites beneath umbrellas, to the enjoyment of young and old.

At approximately 5 p.m., a slight din of music could be heard down the wet Main Street toward Unity House of Pizza. A fire truck, fully decorated with Christmas lights and blaring holiday tunes, made its way up the reflective street and parked next to the crowd. Unity Fire Chief Blaine Parsons was behind the wheel and Santa and Mrs. Claus could be seen next to him.

Suddenly the music stopped as the door of the fire truck swung open and down hopped Santa, along with Mrs. Claus, ready to light the large decorated Christmas trees and begin the celebration in earnest.

Festivities continued at the Unity Elementary School gym, where there was cookie decorating, along with a performance by Cassie’s School of Dance, harp music by Amy Kercsmar, and photos with Santa, Mrs. Claus and their elves.

Unity Business Exchange hosted the event, which was made possible by donations from Unity businesses.
