Belfast — Crews began installing U.S. Cellular antennas and radio equipment in the steeple of the First Church in Belfast Friday, July 20.

A representative from U.S. Cellular discussed the company's plans to install the equipment in the steeple, which already houses equipment for Verizon, May 9. The company plans to complete the work in two phases: the first phase will be the installation of radio equipment, and then the antennas will be installed during the second phase.

U.S. Cellular said the equipment will not be visible once it is installed, as all of it is housed within the columns. Installing the equipment in the columns will increase their size by about four inches, causing them to protrude from the steeple about one inch, but the company plans to construct molding to mask the protrusion.

Installation is expected to take about four to six weeks.
