Curry, Curtis, Norwood, White top four as Lions ninth at Spartan

Tournament hosted by Sanford one of toughest in state

Sanford — A five-hour round-trip school bus ride was in store for Belfast wrestlers as the Lions loaded up and headed west on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 5-6 for the prestigious Spartan Tournament.

Belfast racked up 92 points, good for a ninth among 24 teams, propelled by four top-four individual finishes.

Timberlane of Plaistow, N.H. again finished first with 288 points.

The team scores were: Timberlane 288, Marshwood of South Berwick 168.5, Massabesic of Waterboro 117, Camden Hills of Rockport 112.5, Timberlane "B" 104.5, Mountain Valley of Rumford 104, York, 98, Sanford 95, Belfast 92, Scarborough 91.5, Portland 82, Bonny Eagle of Standish 76, Noble of North Berwick 62, Massabesic "B" 35, Biddeford 34.5, Noble "B" 12, Sacopee Valley of Hiram 9, Thornton Academy of Saco 8, Camden Hills "B" 4, Marshwood "B" 3 and York "B", Portland "B", Scarborough "B" and Mountain Valley "B" no score.

The Lions had four top-four finishes: Chase Curry (3rd at 132), Patrick Curtis (3rd at 138), Jason Norwood (4th at 182) and Brian White (3rd at 220).

The individual Belfast results, with Lions listed first, were:

106 pounds — Timothy Smith lost to Eric Andrews, CH, 2-0; pinned Adam Genereux, San, at 3:08; and lost to Anthony Napolitano, Por, 11-4.

120 pounds — Patrick Hanley was pinned by Dawson Allen, CH, at 0:17; and was pinned by David Undlin, Scar, at 4:32.

126 pounds — Wyatt Staples was pinned by Ryan St. Laurent, Mass, at 0:50; pinned Dustin Brewer, BE, at 3:08; and was pinned by Alex Shorey, MtVal, at 2:50.

132 pounds — Chase Curry pinned Liam Marshall, Scar, at 0:56; pinned Nat Grader, York, at 4:45; was pinned by Connor McGonagle, Tim, at 1:31; won by major decision over Ian Henderson, CH, 11-3; and beat Matt Thompson, Mar, 6-4, in the consolation final. Curry finished third.

Ryan Peavey was pinned by Ian Henderson, CH, at 1:39; and was pinned by Ryan Schoff, Mar, at 3:43.

138 pounds — Patrick Curtis pinned Zack Odell, Mass, at 0:18; lost to Antonio Pallaria, Tim., 18-3; pinned Owen Grader, York, at 0:36; beat Alex Rachkoskie, Noble, 14-1; pinned Anthony Mazza, MtVal, at 1:54; and beat Sam Leishman, Scar, 8-0, in the consolation final. Curtis finished third.

Chris Fournier was pinned by Caleb Frost, BE, at 2:26; and was pinned by Michael Baker, San, at 2:13.

145 pounds — Elijah Charbonnier was pinned by Noah Lang, CH, at 1:00; pinned Michael Delev, Por, at 2:00; and lost to Tyler Fitz, BE, 7-3.

152 pounds — Nathaniel Porter was pinned by Dan Gryzboski, Tim, at 1:28; and was pinned by Ethan Hastings, MtVal, at 4:48.

182 pounds — Jason Norwood was pinned by Austin Niles, York, at 1:22; pinned Cameron Scofner, Scar, at 0:16; pinned Billy Savage, Tim, at 0:36; pinned Aaron Penny, Mar, at 3:14; and was pinned by Malcolm Gartland, Por, at 1:48, in the consolation final. Norwood finished fourth.

220 pounds — Brian White pinned Gregg Floyd, Mass, at 3:21; was pinned by Sol Demers, San, at 1:56; beat Garrett Gonyea, SV, 9-2; and pinned Zac Lau, Bid, at 2:46 in the consolation final. White finished third.

285 pounds — Cam Watts pinned Jacob Breton, Mass, at 4:59; was pinned by Nick Works, San, at 1:17; and was pinned by Harry Degenhardt, Por, at 1:27.
