Diamond dandies: Independent league sees plenty of action

Two Maine divisions include five Midcoast squads

The Maine Independent Baseball League rode into its second week, with 17U and 19U Divisions in full swing.

On Sunday, July 5 in 17U action, Midcoast defeated Raiders 13-6, Raiders fell to Sebasticook 8-7, Falmouth beat Maineiacs 9-0, Midcoast beat Sebasticook 11-1 and Falmouth beat Maineiacs 14-0, while on Friday, July 3, Midcoast beat Sebasticook 10-9, Maineiacs beat Fairfield 17-4 and Raiders bested Turner Bandits 14-4

The lone 19U game saw Sluggers swing to a 3-2 win over Tidewater Oil (Midcoast) on Thursday, July 2.

The standings as of Monday, July 6 included:

17U South — Falmouth 6-0, Turner Bandits 5-1, Skowhegan 3-0, Sluggers 1-0, Maineiacs 3-4, Fairfield 2-4, Messalonskee 1-3, Raiders 2-5, Winthrop 0-3 and Capital Bombers 0-4.

17U North — Motor City 5-1, Machias 4-1, Rock Coast Rip Tide 3-1, Midcoast 3-3, Hermon 3-3, Sting 2-2, Houlton 1-1, Sebasticook 2-4, River Hawks 2-4 and Downeast Storm 1-5.

17U Midcoast teams

Maineiacs (Waldoboro) — Isaac McCollett, Ethan Reed, Garret Hutchins, Hayden Staples, Isaac Simmons, Tucker Holgerson, Aaron Reed, Isaac Bickford, Eli Pluecker, Porter Gahagan, Donnie Havener, Walker Simmons, Blake Morrison and Wyatt Simmons. The team is coached by Keith Simmons.

Raiders (Waldoboro) — Max Moody, Noah Crosby, Isaiah Staples, Ryan Jarvis, Kallon Mortensen, Tyler Metcalf, Logan Look, Tristan Francis, Ivan Murphy, Matthew Holbrook, Sam Moody and Kyle Smith. The team is coached by Matt Moody.

Midcoast (Belfast) — Oliver Tarbox, Zepherin Leppanen, Kyle Ingraham, Matthew LeBlanc, Curtis Littlefield, Dakota Harriman, Cody Reynolds, Jacob Lindelof, Andrew Donald, Cole Ellis, Ashton Ellis, Gage Ellis, Declan Knowlton, Daveon Raven, Noah Hurd, Anthony Lepore and Nathan Ashey. The team is coached by Fred Black.

Rock Coast Rip Tide (Five Town) — Elias Libby, Duncan Oakes-Nelsen, Alex Bartlett, Bowen Brann, Joe Coffey, Cameron Brown, Sawyer Olsen, Mason Chadwick, Lucas Moody, Blade Brann, Owen Hotchkin, Owen Berez, Landonn Tabbutt, Eben Fagonde and Ben Tohanczyn. The team is coached by Barrett Brown.

19U Midcoast team

Tidewater Oil (Midcoast in Belfast) — Dylan Abbott, Jason Bartlett, Isaac Bernosky, Brandon Cournoyer, True Crane, Joey Curtis, Reid Gagnon, Eamon Goscinski, Liam McConnell, Patrick McConnell, Obie Miller, Sam Moody, Dakota Payson, Ethan Porter, Aiden Schecter, Tanner Veilleux and Tommy Walker. The team is coached by Kurt Payson, Tim Moody and Penson Bartlett.

17U

Midcoast 13, Raiders 6

At Searsport July 5, Midcoast continued its winning ways with its third straight victory. Midcoast scored two runs in the first, five in the fourth and fifth innings and one more in the sixth, while the Raiders tallied two in the first, three in the second and one in the third.

Leading Midcoast at the plate were Leppanen (2 hits, 2 runs, RBI), Ashey (2 hits, 2 RBIs, run), Pat McConnell (2 hits, run), Knowlton (run), LeBlanc (hit, run, RBI), Ingraham (hit, run), Littlefield (run), Cole Ellis (run), Liam McConnell (hit, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Gage Ellis (hit) and Hurd (3 hits, 2 runs, RBI).

For the Raiders, Staples (hit, run), Mortensen (hit, 2 RBIs, 2 runs), Max Moody (hit, run), Jarvis (hit, 2 RBIs), Sam Moody (hit), Metcalf (hit, 2 runs) and Francis (3 hits) paced the offense.

Reynolds, Pat McConnell and Gage Ellis pitched for Midcoast, as the trio allowed nine hits and six walks, with five strikeouts. Mortensen and Staples pitched for the Raiders, as the duo scattered 13 hits and three walks, with four strikeouts.

Midcoast 11, Sebasticook 1 (6 inns.)

At Searsport July 5, Midcoast needed a mere six innings to dispatch of visiting Sebasticook. Midcoast scored two runs in the first, five in the second, one in the third and fifth innings and two more in the sixth. Sebasticook’s lone run came in the second frame.

Leading the hosts at the dish were Leppanen (2 hits, 3 runs), Liam McConnell (run, RBI), Ashey (run), LeBlanc (run), Knowlton (hit, run, 2 RBIs), Pat McConnell (hit, run, RBI), Ingraham (hit, RBI), Littlefield (hit, 2 RBIs) and Hurd (hit).

For Sebasticook, M. Bottomfield, Bradley Moore and Owen Upton collected hits.

Knowlton and Gage Ellis toed the rubber for Midcoast, as the teammates allowed a combined three hits and no walks, with five strikeouts.

Jordan Hawthorn, Hunter Upton and Isiah Morin pitched for Sebasticook, as the trio allowed seven hits and eight walks, with eight strikeouts.

Raiders 14, Turner Bandits 4 (6 inns.)

At Minot July 3, the Raiders swung to victory by way of mercy rule. The Maineiacs plated eight runs in the fifth inning and added five more in the sixth, while the Bandits scored three in the third and one in the sixth.

Leading the Raiders at the plate were Staples (2 singles, run, stolen base), Mortensen (2 singles, run, Max Moody (2 singles), Crosby (2 singles, 2 runs), Jarvis (single, 2 runs), Look (single, run), Holbrook (3 singles, 2 runs), Metcalf (single, run) and Francis (2 doubles, 3 runs).

For the Bandits (first names unavailable), C. Decoster (single, run), A. Decoster (double, run), Mollica (home run, single), Berry (single), Thibeault (single), Bean (single) and Duchaime (run) paced the offense.

Mortensen and Crosby pitched for the Raiders, as the duo allowed seven hits and one walk, with five strikeouts. Turner Bandit pitchers scattered 16 hits and five walks, with two strikeouts.

Midcoast 10, Sebasticook 9

At Searsport July 3, Midcoast held off a late Sebasticook rally and swung to their first win of the campaign. Midcoast scored four in the first inning, one in the second and five in the fourth, while Sebasticook scored three in the third, fifth and sixth innings.

Leading Midcoast at the plate were Leppanen (run), Ashey (hit, 2 runs), Knowlton (2 hits, 2 RBIs, 2 runs), LeBlanc (hit, run, RBI), Ingraham (hit, RBI), Reynolds (hit, run), Liam McConnell (RBI), Littlefield (run, RBI), Pat McConnell (2 hits, 2 RBIs, run) and Cole Ellis (hit, 2 RBIs).

For Sebasticook, Kirk Martinez (hit, 2 runs), Mike Scharf (hit, RBI, 2 runs), Hunter Upton (hit, run, 2 RBIs), Jordan Hawthorn (RBI), Cote (hit, 2 RBIs), Dunn (run), Owen Upton (2 hits, run), Aiden Trafton (hit, run, RBI) and Bradley Moore (run) paced the offense.

Leppanen and Littlefield pitched for Midcoast, as the twosome allowed seven hits and five walks, with 15 strikeouts.

K. Martinez, Moore and Hawthorn pitched for Sebasticook, allowing nine hits and eight walks, with nine strikeouts.

19U

Sluggers 3, Tidewater Oil 2

At Searsport July 2, Tidewater Oil came out ever so narrowly on the short end in its first game of the campaign. Tidewater Oil scored its runs in the second inning, while the Sluggers tallied runs in the first, fourth and fifth frames.

Leading Tideater Oil at the plate were Sam Moody (2 hits, RBI), Bartlett (hit), Veilleux (run) and Walker (run).

For the Sluggers (first names unavailable), Trisch (2 hits, 2 runs), Snow (hit, RBI), Keblinsky (hit, RBI, run) and Wheaton (hit) paced the offense.

Curtis, Sam Moody and Crane pitched for Tidewater Oil, as the group allowed five hits and three walks, with seven strikeouts.

Wheaton and Trisch pitched for the Sluggers, allowing three hits and six walks, with six strikeouts.
