Unity — Vicky Silke of Dixmont has been chosen as the UniTel's 2019 photo contest winner.

This is Silke's second year in a row winning the UnTel photo contest, this year submitting a photo of a loon resting in water.

For submitting the winning entry, Silke will received a Roku box for her home, $200 in spending cash and her photo will once again be featured on the UniTel 2019-2020 Directory cover.

Elizabeth Orcutt of Dixmont was awarded second place for her submission, “Yellow-rumped Warbler,” and Holly Ryan of Unity placed third for her submission, “Fiddlehead.”

"More than a hundred entries were received for this year's Directory Cover Photo Contest and the decision was difficult," said Laurie Osgood, UniTel CEO. "Loons are such beautiful animals and, as it turns out, very photogenic. Vicky captured a beautiful, colorful image of what appears to be a loon family, and her photo earned first place in the 2019 contest."

According to a UniTel press release, Silke is a Maryland native who has lived in Maine for more than three decades. She has grown as a photographer since moving to Maine, spending her spare time capturing beautiful wildlife around her home and beyond.

Her love of photography started when she was a teenager working at a local camera shop. She saved enough money to buy a camera and started learning.

Today she is a member of the Eastern Maine Camera Club and is experimenting with photo editing software and a new camera.

“I really enjoy taking pictures of Maine’s natural beauty,” Silke said. “I submitted a few entries for this contest, including wildlife, landscape, and general scenery. Maine is such a beautiful state that anywhere you look it’s like a scene created for amazing photographic opportunities.

"I’m very happy to have this photo chosen as this year’s winner and I would encourage anyone with an eye for photography and a love for Maine to get outside and see what you can capture in your lens.”

UniTel plans to bring the contest back next year.
