Documentary, speak-out for V-Day 2019

Feb 05, 2019
The Netflix Original documentary “City of Joy” had its world premiere in November at the DOC NYC film festival.

Belfast — The community will gather Sunday, Feb. 17, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Abbott Room of Belfast Free Library, 106 High St., in solidarity with the international movement V-DAY — "One Billion Rising," a grassroots movement to stop violence against women and girls.

Sparked by the first production of "The Vagina Monologues," a play written by Eve Ensler that sparked a movement around the world, voices continue to rise in resistance and truth telling. The theme this year is Turn Pain into Power.

The afternoon begins with the NetFlix documentary "City of Joy" (2018, USA/Congo), a film that follows the unlikely friendship that develops between Congolese doctor Dr. Denis Mukwege (2016 nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize), playwright Ensler and a charismatic Congolese human rights activist who join forces to create a safe haven for women survivors in the middle of violence-torn Eastern Congo.

The screening will be followed by a circle for speaking out, sharing stories and poems, celebrating the continued growth of community awareness and the strength and courage of women speaking out — leaving all with the hope that change will happen. All are welcome.
