DOT to hold public meeting on Route 1 reconstruction

Searsport — Searsport is on track to have Route 1 reconstruction work done in 2018 and 2019, according to Maine Department of Transportation's three-year work plan. The department will hold a public meeting about the project May 23 at Searsport Town Hall from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Beginning next spring, a section of Route 1 from Savage Road through the downtown area to Station Road is scheduled to be rebuilt with new paving, drainage, curbing and new, widened sidewalks. Town Manager James Gillway said the town is hoping to make some small changes to the state's reconstruction plan, including adding a turning lane between Trundy Road and Station Avenue.
The project has been a long time in the making, with an initial scoping report completed by the town's Economic Development Committee in 2004. Now that it is scheduled in the work plan and funding for the $5 million project has been secured by DOT, with some funding also secured by the town, Gillway said he is confident work will go forward with completion planned before the town's 175th anniversary in 2020.

Someone from the Town should talk to the town management in Thomaston about how the state handles this construction. Several small businesses were lost to seemingly never-ending road work and the lack of adequate support for them to survive. We are very lucky to have the restaurants and shops we have in Searsport, and they don't deserve to be ruined financially in the process of this project. [BTW, Two years later, Thomaston is STILL NOT DONE]
Thank you, Kenneth, the link should be working now.
