Down East calls for Art of Giving

Sep 13, 2017

Camden — Down East: The Magazine of Maine celebrates the arts in Maine and support community causes at its fourth annual Art of Giving Gala, where attendees can purchase original Maine-Made artwork to help support charity.

Artists can apply online to be part of the event. The final four artists will be chosen to display their works by a small panel of judges based on their submissions. Judges will consider technique, aesthetics and the artist’s biography. Applications are due by Saturday, Sept. 30; to apply, visit downeast.com/artofgiving.

Twenty percent of art sales will go to Ticket to Ride, a program managed by the Maine Arts Commission that provides funding to defray the cost of travel for any Maine pre-kindergarten to 12th grade schools wishing to visit art-based venues and events in Maine as part of a well-rounded curriculum. The remaining funds will go to the exhibiting artists.

“We’ve had fantastic response year after year to our Art of Giving program. To date, together with our readers, we have raised nearly $100,000 for charities in Maine that support local communities,” said Down East Editor-in-chief Kathleen Fleur. “We’re proud to support the Ticket to Ride Program and four talented artists again this year.”

Last year’s artists and supporting charities included R. Scott Baltz, who supported Harbor House; Therese L. Provenzano, who supported Maine Farmland Trust; Matthew Russ, who supported Lifeflight of Maine; and Roland Salazar, who supported Community Partners.

The gala is set for Thursday, Oct. 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Stroudwater Lodge, 116 Landing Road in Westbrook. Attendance is free, but Down East asks that interested guests RSVP to events@downeast.com to be placed on the guest list. The event is presented by Northbridge Companies in celebration of Northbridge’s Artists in Residence program.
