Thomaston — Before the candy flows into bags, pillow cases or buckets — and, ultimately, into mouths on Halloween — it was time to get one's metabolism revved up for the "Frightening" 5-kilometer road race, presented by Hybrid Fitness, on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Keith Drago, 32, of Rockport finished first in 18:45.6, while Jason Bigonia, 42, of was second at 19:19.1.

Katie Buckley, 40, of Searsmont was the first female finisher in 22:43.5, as she was fifth among 50 participants.

The race was Halloween-themed and the fourth in the One Community Many Voices 5K road race series for 2019.

Age-group and overall prizes were presented, in Halloween-style, as well as a prize for the "ghoul-est" costume.

All measure of ghosts and goblins showed up, including cats, skeletons, Wonder Woman, banana, cat running with a dog, hippie girl, court jester, woman with high, colorful socks, scary twin girls right out of the "Shining" and Forrest Gump, Cruella Deville and President Abraham Lincoln even made appearances.

Drago actually won the race wearing jeans, "which I'm sure slowed him down a little bit," said race director Lucas McNelly. Drago was a sheriff and no one was above the law — or faster, even if he wore jeans.

Runner-up Bigonia pushed a stroller with a live sleeping baby along for the ride.

Chase Oettinger, 6, won the best costume award with his Lumiere outfit from "Beauty and the Beast."

The course was the same used at the "Tax Day" road race, which allowed runners to compare their progress from earlier in the year. The course is flat and fast, and "very personal-record friendly," McNelly said.
