Thomaston — If there is one event that truly signifies the "official" start of summer it is the annual Thomaston Fourth of July Firecracker 5-kilometer road race and this year 143 hardy souls strutted their sizzling early-morning stuff over the 3.1-mile course — with winner Keith Drago shooting off, from start to finish, like a brilliant fireworks' display.

Additionally, nearly 50 children participated in the one-mile fun run.

In the Tuesday 5K on a glorious morning, Drago, 30, of Rockland dominated the field as he finished the course in 18:04.88 amid ideal temperatures in the 60s. Drago essentially outdistanced the field by nearly two minutes, an unbelievable amount of time in a relatively short race.

There was an exciting battle for second as Matthew Phelan, 39, of Rockland and Darren Winchenbach, 35, of Saco (formerly of Waldoboro), ended stride for stride and literally in a photo finish. When the dust settled the official results gave Phelan the edge 20:03.64 to 20:03.64.

Christiana Prater-Lee, 20, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. was the first female finisher, as she crossed the course in 20:33.13. She was sixth overall.

In the children's run, Dylan Benner, 11, of Tenants Harbor finished first in 5:49 and Audrey Mackie, 11, South Thomaston second in 5:55.

The event is one of the more popular 3.1-mile races in the Midcoast because it draws locals and visitors from around the country — and sometimes the world.
