Ecclesiastes│ The Meaning of Life

Pastor Adam Kohlstrom

Series: Ecclesiastes│ Message: The Meaning of Life

Scripture: Ecclesiastes 1:12-18; 2:12-16

How would you summarize today’s sermon to someone else?

How is God speaking to us through this week’s Scripture / sermon? How are you going to respond? (Matthew 7:26-27; James 1:22)?

How would you explain the difference between intelligence and wisdom? Have you ever met a smart, yet foolish person?

1:12-14. Where “under the sun” do people search for meaning?

1:15. Despite your best efforts, what “crooked” things in your life and in this world has your wisdom (or science, or society, or law, or government, etc.) been unable to “straighten?” “What is lacking cannot be counted” means that despite our best wisdom and calculations, life just doesn’t add up – the account refuses to balance. Share about a time you felt like this.

1:16. At what age do you remember first thinking, “I know more than my parents (or teachers)”? What caused you to realize you had a lot left to learn?

1:18. Why do we assume that the smarter you are, the easier and better life will be? Why do you think the Preacher says that increasing wisdom and knowledge increases grief and sorrow? When has increase in knowledge caused you an increase in sorrow? How does the account of Genesis 3 illustrate the truth of the Preacher’s words here?

2:13-16. Is the death of the fool any different from the death of the wise? Can wisdom save from death? How is light better than darkness? Why then is a life of wisdom better than a life of folly?

Proverbs 1:7; 9:10; 15:33. Why do you think wisdom is repeatedly described as “the fear of the Lord”? What does it look like to “fear the Lord”?

1 Corinthians 1:18-25. What do we learn from this passage about the difference between the wisdom of God and the wisdom of the world? According to Colossians 2:3, where is wisdom found?
