Thorndike — The Mount View wrestling team may not have collected the Class B North championship on Saturday, Feb. 10, but the Mustangs experienced a supreme all-around performance in their home gymnasium — including a day to remember for a pair of mat athletes in their home gymnasium.

The Mustangs earned a fourth-place tie with Medomak Valley of Waldoboro (102 points), while Belfast also secured a seventh-place finish (61.5) among 21 squads, which made it a banner day combined for the two Waldo County high school teams.

Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft won the team title, amassing 191.5 points.

Mount View’s Nathaniel Fuller and Mark Ward nabbed championships at 285 and 138 pounds, respectively — in their home gym.

Other top-four finishers for Waldo County student-athletes — all of whom qualify for the state tournament — include Belfast’s Chase Curry (2nd at 132), Mount View’s Zach Ward (3rd at 145), Belfast’s Jacob Racioppi (4th at 152), Mount View’s Jason Barnard (3rd at 160), Mount View’s Matthew Barnard (4th at 170) and Belfast’s Brian White (4th at 220).

Thus, Mark Ward, Fuller, Curry, Zach Ward, Racioppi, Jason Barnard, Matthew Barnard and White will participate in the state Class B championships, slated for Saturday, Feb. 17 at 9:30 a.m. at Wells High School.

"It felt great to wrestle and win in my home gym," said Mark Ward, who scored a one-point win over two-time regional champion Alex Fogarty of Oceanside. "There were some great competitors. Fogarty is a two-time regional champ so I knew it would be a tough match. I'm thankful for the supportive team members and coaches at Mount View who have worked with me to get here."

"It felt amazing to win the regionals, especially at our own school," said Fuller. "It's something I've worked hard for and I couldn't have done it without my family and friends being there supporting me. I also couldn't have done it without my great coaches — coach Hamilton [Richards], coach Chris Cole and coach Devan Fuller for pushing me to be better."

The team scores were: Foxcroft Academy 191.5, Dexter 109, Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln 107, Medomak Valley and Mount View 102, Ellsworth 79.5, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield 66, Belfast 61.5, Penobscot Valley of Howland 56, Bucksport and Fort Kent 54, Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston 47, Winslow 37, Caribou 35, Calais 31, Piscataquis of Guilford 21, Hermon 20, John Bapst of Bangor 10, Bangor Christian 9.5, Lee Academy 4 and Washington Academy of East Machias 3.
