Belfast — April is National Poetry Month, and the Belfast Free Library will mark it with an exhibit and an open reading. The creative work of Marjorie Arnett and 27 poets come together in an ekphrastic exhibition, “Painter & Poets,” to be held during April in the Kramer Gallery of the library, 106 High St.

The term ekphrastic refers to a form of writing, mostly poetry, wherein the author describes another work of art, usually visual. Belfast artist Arnett asked poets to select one of her colorful paintings and write a poem interpreting the work through vivid, often dramatic, verbal descriptions.

The public is invited to a 5 to 6 p.m. opening reception Tuesday, April 2, in the gallery, followed an open poetry reading at 6:30 p.m. in the Abbott Room. Sign-up for the reading begins at 6 p.m.; Belfast’s new poet laureate, Arielle Greenberg, will start the evening of poetry. For more information, call 338-3884, ext. 10.
