Belfast — The downtown Old Professor’s Bookshop invites the public to this month’s "Shop Talk" by University of Maine geography professor Stephen Hornsby, beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, in the parlor above the bookshop at 99 Main St.

His talk is entitled “Picturing America, The Golden Age of Pictorial Maps.” It is based on his new book of the same title.

Dr. Hornsby, also a coauthor of the prize-winning book Historical Atlas of Maine, will discuss pictorial maps — those that include artwork of objects, animals, people, and imaginary creatures. This millennium-old tradition reached its apex from the 1920s to the 1970s in the United States, as Hornsby will illustrate.

Hornsby is professor of geography and Canada studies and director of the Canadian-American Center, University of Maine, Orono.
