Searsport — The theater program of Searsport District High School, directed by Waldo County's Teacher of the Year Chris Goosman, alternates between a musical and “straight play” for its big fall production. This year’s show is the former and it is in indeed big — 32 performers and a stage crew to boot.

“I've got a great group of seniors and veteran actors in the leads, and lots of energetic younger ensemble members this year,” said Goosman.

They will present “The Wiz,” the 1974 adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s "Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 16 through 18, at 7 p.m. in the cafetorium of the combined middle and high schools, 24 Mortland Road. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Dubbed “the super soul musical” when it was winning Tonys on Broadway, this urban retelling has a book by William F. Brown; and music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls. “The Wiz" is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

Local pianist par excellence Lincoln Blake will accompany the students, who are drawn from both the middle and high schools. Stage managers are Hannah Nadeau and Esme Freeman. Lighting design is by Steven Courtney, William Bradley and George Dakin

Cast in the familiar story are Lily Stratton as Aunt Em, William Bradley as Uncle Henry/Lord High Underling, Eran Raines as Dorothy, Lauren Burkard as Addaperle the Good Witch of the North, Colby Johnson as the Scarecrow, Malcolm Jones as the Tin Man, Cole Dubois as the Lion, Steven Courtney as the Gatekeeper, Holden Clapp as the Wiz, Abby Donnelly as Evillene the Wicked Witch of the West, Ashley Harriman as the Messenger and Madison Young as Glinda the Good Witch of the South.
