Richard Parker, played by tiger King when not computer-generated, and Pi (Suraj Sharma) make for an odd but compelling couple in Ang Lee's “Life of Pi.”

Belfast — Belfast Free Library’s Friday Night Flix film series has a Fantasy theme during January, with films ranging from the 1930s to this decade. All screenings are free and take place at 7 p.m. in the Abbott Room of the library, 106 High St.

The series continues Jan. 11 with “Life of Pi” (2012, USA/Taiwan/UK/Canada). This visually stunning film tells the story of a young boy named Pi, who is shipwrecked at sea. As a castaway on the lifeboat, he forms a bond with another unlikely survivor of the shipwreck — a fearsome Bengal tiger. Pi and the terrifying beast start out as adversaries but as the days drag into months, they will learn to trust each other — if both are to survive.

Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, this fairytale for adults is bound to warm the heart and feed the soul. The fantasy series continues Jan. 18 with “Frankenstein” (1931, USA); and Jan. 25, “Defending Your Life” (1991, USA).
