Northport — Northport firefighters were called to the report of a car on fire in the parking lot of Northport Beverage, which is located alongside Route 1.

The report of the blaze came in to the Waldo County Regional Communications Center at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, June 25. The initial report indicated all occupants had escaped the vehicle.

The Northport Fire Department did not return a The Republican Journal's request for information. It is unclear how many people were in the vehicle when the fire broke out or if anyone was hurt.

At the scene, firefighters conducted traffic control to slow passing vehicles and direct travelers headed toward Belfast into the breakdown lane to allow space for oncoming cars to pass the scene.

Firefighters could be seen gathered around a charred sedan, and a large plume of smoke hung over that area of Route 1.
