Flix: grad student runs into Nazi villain

Dentophobes might think twice about “Marathon Man”; Laurence Olivier got a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nod for his unnerving performance.

Belfast — Suspense in the theme of the weekly Friday Night Flix series at Belfast Free Library, 106 High St., in May. All the screenings are free and take place at 7 p.m. in the library’s Abbott Room.

Next up on May 18 is “Marathon Man” (1976, USA). This riveting, edge-of-your-seat thriller has two of the finest actors of the 20th century in Dustin Hoffman and Laurence Olivier. After the murder of an American secret agent, the agent’s brother (Hoffman), who is a Columbia Ph.D. candidate and marathon runner, gets caught up in a conspiracy that involves stolen diamonds and an up-close confrontation with one of Germany’s most notorious World War II criminals, diabolically played by Olivier. As it turns out, the marathoner will end up running for his life.

The Suspense series concludes May 25 with “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991, USA).
