Free program on permaculture

Apr 09, 2019

BELFAST — Jesse Labbe-Watson will present a free program on permaculture for the home gardener on Tuesday, April 16, at 7 p.m., at the Belfast Ecovillage and Cohousing community building, 25 Village Rd.

Watson will give an overview of permaculture and describe how home gardeners can use this design system and set of techniques to grow food crops and support healthy ecosystems. “Permaculture is a design system for creating sustainable human habitats,” Watson said. “It offers positive solutions to the problems facing the world by using ecology as the basis of organizing systems of water and food production, housing, technology, economics and community.”

Using several sites in Maine as examples, he will show photos and discuss details of the permaculture design process and methods, giving special attention to water management and perennial food production. He will also provide information on the permaculture design certification program offered by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association.

Watson operates Midcoast Permaculture Design in Rockland and has been doing landscape design, farm planning and installation work for residential and farm clients since 2009. He teaches permaculture design certification courses in partnership with the Resilience Hub at MOFGA and serves on the board of the Permaculture Association of the Northeast.
