Free symposium offers guidance on advance care planning Aug. 30

Belfast — Penobscot Shores will present “Your Life, Your Choices:  A Guide to Advance Care Planning,” a comprehensive educational event, on Thursday, Aug. 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Waldo County YMCA, 157 Lincolnville Ave., Belfast.

Open to all but specially designed for adults age 50-plus, this free event is made possible by the support of Waldo County General Hospital, Waldo County YMCA, MaineHealth Care at Home, AARP Maine and Riposta Funeral Home.

This information-packed, half-day symposium is for those wishing to plan for future care needs for themselves or loved ones to ensure that their wishes are honored.

Local experts will introduce and demystify the various medical, financial, legal and practical matters important for adults to consider as they plan for their later years and/or unexpected health crises.

Among the topics to be covered will be advance directives, palliative vs. hospice care, estate planning, funeral and burial options, writing your own obituary and much more.

Speakers include Lauren Armstrong, LSW, certified advance care planning facilitator with MaineHealth Care at Home; Karin McDonald, MSN, FNP-C, palliative care nurse practitioner with Waldo County General Hospital and Pen Bay Medical Center Palliative Care Services; Susan W. Longley, Esq., Waldo County judge of probate; and Gin Mackey, board member and volunteer with Funeral Consumers Alliance of Maine.

While the program officially begins at 8:30 a.m., attendees are welcome to arrive starting at 7:45 a.m. to check in, enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast and collect free literature in the Resource Area.

A free boxed lunch will also be provided. Participants will be encouraged to submit questions they hope to have answered during the day. Following the conclusion of the formal portion of the program at 1 p.m., presenters will remain available to talk with attendees until 1:30 p.m.
