MISSING IN FREEDOM, ME. Balki was newly adopted and escaped his new home on 10/1/13. He is a Shih-Tsu/Yorkie cross lost in a new and very rural location. He is very shy and likely very scared. DO NOT CHASE! We need everyone looking for this little guy. He is wearing a yellow collar with faux stones and a heart shaped tag but the information on the tag is not clear. If seen, use calming signals (get down very low or lay flat and attempt to lure with food.) Please proceed with caution as Balki may nip being so frightened.

Maine Lost Dog Recovery

UPDATE 2/19/2014 Amazing news to report this morning!

Balki, lost in Freedom, Me on 10/1/13 has been found and is safe.
After receiving reports of a small breed dog living on someone’s property, MLDR made the connection to Balki. A benefactor had been feeding him so we reached out to the ACO of Freedom for assistance. Yesterday, Balki was successfully trapped and is now safe.
After careful consideration from all parties involved, it has been determined that placing Balki in rescue will be in his best interest. His first stop will be a foster home that specializes in small breed dogs and Yorkies/Yorkie mixes in particular. Balki needs time to recover both physically and mentally from this experience and rescue needs to see who the “real” Balki is to insure that his next home is truly the best home for him.
Many thanks to the resident who alerted us to this situation, to the volunteers who helped get our trap to the area, to the foster home and rescue that are stepping up for Balki and most especially to Scott Holmes, Animal Control Officer, for his invaluable assistance and partnership with MLDR.
MLDR will not be responsible for selecting or screening potential adopters but we will keep everyone updated on his progress. When we are told that Balki is ready for a new home, we will let everyone know.
More updates and photos to follow. Balki's vet bills will be a strain on the rescue so when we have the name/address of the vet who will be treating him, we will post that information.

What a great human interest story!
