Antiques Appraisal Night

The Freedom Community Historical Society is presenting an Antiques Appraisal Night on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dirigo Grange Hall. Wondering what it’s worth? Trash or treasure? Come to Freedom’s “Antiques Road Show”! $5 admission with one item, and after that, one item for $7 or three items for $15. Bob Stover, Paul Flynn and Roy Bryant will be the auctioneers! Tables of collectibles will be available for sale. Tables will cost $10 each. Share your collectables and keep the proceeds. Also, there will be a table showing the contents from Fred Flye’s attic. This is a fundraiser for the society. Donations are accepted and appreciated. Refreshments will be served.

Veterans Day

Freedom Rec. Committee will hold its annual Veterans Day Services on Sunday, November 11th in the Freedom Congregational Church starting with the tolling of the bells at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Paul Flynn will lead off with a prayer, Tyler C. Hadyniak will be the MC, there will be a group of singers from the Chordsmen and a variety of speakers. We are now looking for veterans, flag holders, color guards and basically some others to take part in the program. We would appreciate any volunteers, and if you are interested in donating along the refreshment line, please contact Cindy Abbott by calling 382-6177 or me at 382-6024. After the services, refreshments will be served in the church hall. The back door is handicap accessible.

We will also be celebrating the 99th birthday of Freedom’s oldest resident, Roy Ward. Send Roy a birthday card at 1809 Main Road, Greenbush, ME 04418. He will be celebrating his birthday following the Veterans Day Services in the church hall.

Pie Sale

Dirigo Grange 98 will hold its annual pie sale Saturday, Nov. 17, from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the Grange Hall. The cost of the pies will range from $8 to $10, depending on what you want. Choose from apple, pumpkin, cherry cheese, pecan, chocolate cream and custard. If you want to order your pies in advance, please call Lorraine at 382-6301 or Roberta at 382-3166 to place your order.

Meetings

The next selectmen’s meeting will be held on Monday, Nov. 19, starting at 6 p.m. All selectmen’s meetings are open to the public.

The Freedom Community Historical Society will meet at the Town Office on Wednesday, Nov. 14.

Dirigo Grange 98 will meet on Thursday, Nov. 15, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Grange Hall.

From the Town Office

Nomination papers are available from Nov. 8 until Sunday, Dec. 17, for the following offices: selectman, assessor, overseer of the poor, three-year term; clerk, one-year term; tax collector, one-year term; excise tax collector, one-year term; and treasurer, one-year term.

Election of town officers will take place Friday, March 8, 2019, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Election Hall, next door to the Town Office.

Town meeting will be Saturday, March 9, 2019, in the Freedom Grange Hall, beginning at 10 a.m.

The Freedom Town Office will close at noon on Monday, Dec. 31, for year-end paperwork. All tax payments need to be in the office before noon.

Dog licenses are due Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019, by 2 p.m. A $25 late fee will be applied on Feb. 1, 2019.

Voice of Freedom

This past Saturday, the Freedom Congregational Church had its last monthly supper for the season. It was a turkey supper with the best whipped mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes, peas, baked beans, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls, coffee, juice, tea and home-baked varieties of pie, all for only $8.

Where can one go today to have such a great meal that includes all of the above for only $8? The answer is the Freedom Congregational Church suppers. Starting in the spring, they hold a monthly supper right up until November and you can also have them fix a plate for you to take out. The men and women work very hard to prepare a delicious meal for the public and the suppers are certainly much appreciated by all of those that attend.

There were 88 people in attendance for this last dinner and some of the monthly suppers consisted of baked ham, chicken ’n’ biscuits, pork and more. I, for one, do not like turkey. But I decided to go to the turkey supper to support the church. Well, let me tell you, one had a choice of white or dark meat, and I had white turkey on my plate, I gave it a taste, it was moist and it was delicious! I ended up eating it all! I think that, in itself, says a lot about the cooks.

At the beginning of the supper, Pastor Paul Flynn will say grace, which adds a nice touch. It is a great way to meet your family, neighbors and friends by breaking bread together with them. Paul, together with all the members and workers, would like to say “Thank you” for your support by attending their suppers. Now you have something to look forward to in the spring.
